MTV Hive streams Braille's new single "Breakup"
Friday 09 September 2011
It wasn’t long ago that the mixture of breakbeats, dubstep-style bass drops and soulful house vibes exhibited on Braille’s “Breakup” was considered, strictly speaking, a British thing. But as the mutation of global music culture accelerates over the Internet’s wires, the whole world has fully embraced this hybrid dance-floor rumble, pushed it forward, and often adapted it to local needs. Hence, while it may no longer surprise that Braille is the nom-de-plume of a Brooklyn producer (Praveen Sharma, one-half of NYC bass crew Sepalcure), what constitutes a shock is how wonderfully “emo” and feminine “Breakup” is. With it’s electric piano tinkling, its rare soul samples (Loletta Hathaway, Matthew Larkin Cassell), and laid-back knowing melancholy, it’s modern bass music playing with the affectations of New York’s disco and house traditions, in the same way that other producers have used Latin American cumbia or South African kwaito. So, if this is the sound of dubstep going local, then yes … more please.
